Petrified Wood Water Cypress Root Polished Round Slab Sunnyside
Lovely Petrified Wood from Sunnyside, Washington.
This is a lovely full round, slabbed, and polished on one side.
It is 4.5 inches by 3.8 inches and 10.5 mm or .4 inch thick.
This rare specimen of Taxodioxylon type species or Taxodium ‘knees’ (which show the characteristic
internal voids when sliced) came from an old collection and was originally collected on the Anderson Ranch in the Rattlesnake Hills of eastern Washington over 40 years ago! The area has been closed to collecting for over 30 years.
Petrified Wood forms when a tree dies and is buried by sediments. Minerals in the groundwater then permeated the wood, replacing the original organic matter and turning it to stone. The main mineral is silica, but trace elements in the silica create a variety of colors.
In the middle of the Miocene epoch, about 17.5 million years ago, volcanic eruptions occurred near the borders of Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Forests were covered by lava and ash, resulting in numerous deposits of fossilized wood across the Columbia Plateau.
