This natural semiprecious gemstone material, known as Ocean Wave Jasper, is a variety is silicified rhyolite flow from off the northwest coast of Madagascar.
Ocean Wave was mined in the early 2000's in the Kabamby Ocean Jasper claim. It exhibits wavy bands in pastels rather than the orbicular patterning Ocean Jasper is famous for.
The mining area stretches for about 120 miles on the remote and rugged western coastline, on the northernmost part of this island nation. The area has no road, so the material must be transported to civilization by boat.
Jasper is a member of the chalcedony family, or a microcrystalline quartz, and it has a hardness of about 7 on the Moh's scale.
