Moss Agate
Moss Agate is so named for its mossy shaped or bush like inclusions.
These are usually formed with mineral impurities, and are often growths of iron or manganese oxides.
Moss Agate is found in many locations, but a large amount comes from India.
Though most Moss Agate, especially the India Moss Agate is emerald green, it doesn't have to be green. Montana Agate is considered a Moss Agate and it is usually red, brown or black. Australian Moss Agate is also black.
Moss inclusions are generally more mossy, plume inclusions are more solid and flower shaped, and dendrites are thinner and like a tree branch.
Moss inclusions are the most common inclusions in agate. Often agates may contain both moss and plume inclusions.
Agate is a type of chalcedony, usually at least slightly translucent and banded or with inclusions. It forms in concentric layers in a wide variety of colors and textures. Each individual agate forms by filling a cavity in host rock.
Agate has a hardness of about 7 on the Moh's scale. The name is derived from its occurrence at the Achates River in southwestern Sicily.
