Mahogany Obsidian

mahogany-obsidian

Mahogany Obsidian is semi precious stone material that is a deep black with blood red streaks.

The red coloration is likely the result of trapped hematite or iron. Mahogany Obsidian was probably named that because the reddish brown color is similar to mahogany wood.

Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass. This glassy, lustrous mineral is found in lava flows. Obsidian is produced when lava cools very quickly. The lava cools so quickly that no crystals can form.

Though it comes from various locations, most of our Mahogany Obsidian comes from Mexico.

However we also have cabochons on our cabochon website BarlowsGems from a gorgeous Mahogany Gold Sheen that comes from Glass Buttes, Oregon. Gold Sheen is when the material is held in bright light it has a flash of sparkling gold colored chatoyance or light seeming to glow from within.

Obsidian has been used since the stone age, and most Mahogany Obsidian locations were discovered by Native Americans.  The natural glass is perfect for knapping and creating arrowheads.  It has also been used to create mirrors, and mask.

Metaphysical Properties of Mahogany Obsidian:

Mahogany Obsidian is said to help dissolve ancestral patterns of abuse, negativity, hatred or fear that are ingrained into the emotional body. Mahogany Obsidian is also said to be soothing during birth and it helps the body dispel poisons.
