Hertfordshire Puddingstone is largely confined to the English counties of Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, but small amounts occur throughout the London Basin.
Hertfordshire Puddingstone is found in the Upnor Formation of the Lambeth Group (lower Eocene, 56-55 million years ago).
"Puddingstone" is a nonscientific name for a conglomerate rock in which rounded pebbles occur in a matrix of sharply contrasting color. The name "puddingstone" was first used in Great Britain where the rocks were said to "look like a plum pudding".
Hertfordshire Puddingstone was used in the building of many historic buildings in the United Kingdom.
Hertfordshire puddingstone was credited in local folklore with several supernatural powers, including being a protective charm against witchcraft.
