Shattuckite (darker blue) and Chrysocolla are copper silicates and are found in the copper oxide zones of major copper deposits. Both are often found together and/or with other copper ores, most commonly Malachite.
This natural mineral specimen came from Sonora, Mexico.
The name Chrysocolla first appears in the writings of Theophrastus (315 BC). Chrysocolla is named from the Greek chrysos - "gold" and kolla - "glue" in allusion to the name of the material used to solder gold. Shattuckite is named from where it was first found, i.e. the Shattuck mine, in Bisbee, Arizona. Until around 2003/2004, the Shattuckite Mine was the ONLY mine in the world producing this mineral, though now it comes from Namibia, the Congo and Mexico.
