Chrysocolla
Chrysocolla is a hydrated copper silicate and is found in the copper oxide zones of major copper deposits.
Chrysocolla is usually found with other copper ores, most commonly Malachite. Arizona is the leading copper producing state, though Chrysocolla has been found in many locations including Peru, Chile, Mexico, Israel, and Africa.
Chrysocolla is never found in crystal formation, but if there is a high presence of silica it can come in a truly rare and beautiful translucent material referred to as Gem Silica.
Common Chrysocolla has a hardness of about 2-4 and it usually needs to be treated in some way with a surface resin in order to cut it.
Chrysocolla can vary in color from a blueish green to light sky blue to a bright turquoise blue.
The newest find of Chrysocolla is the beautiful Chrysocolla and Cuprite material coming from the Milpillas Mine in Mexico. This lovely blue/green, orange and red material is known as "Sonora Sunset" or "Sonora Sunrise".
Eilat stone is a rare from of Chrysocolla intergrown with Turquoise and Malachite and it is found north of Eilat, Israel.
Chrysocolla is named from the Greek chrysos - "gold" and kolla - "glue" in allusion to the name of the material used to solder gold. The name was first used by Theophrastus in 315 B.C.
Lore states that Cleopatra carried Chrysocolla wherever she went. It was believed that Chrysocolla would help make those who had volatile tempers more sensitive and tolerant, and those that carried this stone would have more creativity and femininity. Women believed it made them strong and beautiful. The legend is that this stone improved communication skills and soothed the people around you. Native American cultures believed it could strength the body and bring about calm when one was upset.
